Fly Free Lamp

An experiment in wings and light.

1. Discovery

Using the short story "From the Desk of Daniel Varsky" I set out to create a lamp that poetically expressed freedom and transformation.

I also set out to learn mechanics of opening and closing, as well as installation of LED lighting.

Story synopsis: Story by Nicole Krausse about loss and loneliness, and how objects like furniture can hold our memories.

2. Creation

As I wanted to express transformation, I explored various ways an object could open and close.

Paper models informed the shape and weight bearing structural opportunities and failures

Final direction: expandable wing shapes with LED lighting strips inside.

3. Implementation

Rendered in Solidworks

4. Reflection

Many design elements (LED, swing open, hang from ceiling) is difficult to accomplish.

Next time, simple is better!
